Selection between many different V, D or J genes in V(D)J recombination contributes to variability in the antibody CDRs.

Interestingly, not all V, D or J gene segments will be expressed, some are pseudogenes and others are expressed rarely based on their distance from intergenic control regions within the heavy-chain locus that activate V(D)J recombination.
